Most small business ventures fail within the first five years of being started. Often times people that mean well will try to discourage you from starting your own business. They have a false impression that you have to have a natural aptitude and talent for being in business. In their minds, entrepreneurs are born and not developed. You have the prerogative of believing their misguided perception and following their pessimism or pursuing your dreams. Winston Churchill has been known to have said: ” A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” I believe if you are motivated to start your own business you have one of the traits for being an entrepreneur, desire.
Obviously, there are skills that you absolutely need to have to be a successful businessperson. The good news though, is there are many ways to develop those skills within the journey. When you first start out, the skills that you may lack are not as important as the heart and guts required to get started in business.
Two of the key ingredients that is required for entrepreneurship is perseverance and resilience. Remember when you had to do a research paper or project back in school? Well this is your research project on steroids! Getting started will call for you learning many new things and concepts from your research that may require further study and understanding. Progress may seem slow and moving forward will test your resolve. The challenge is not to give up but, continue on with your mission and purpose of the project.
Another valuable attribute in the business world is for you to have thick skin. Worthy of noting, along your journey in building a successful business, you will encounter many individuals that would be overjoyed to see you fail so they can succeed. Undoubtedly, you come across people who have nothing good to say and spew negativity about you and your business. You must take the constructive advice and tune out the completely negative. The journey will not be all cupcakes and ding dongs, you will have to grit it out at times. The question becomes how bad do you want success?
Watch this clip to discover just how bad some others want success….
Achieving ultimate success in your business or life will require perseverance, a thick skin, and finally, the ability to deal with… FAILURE! That’s right. Failure. Many of the most successful people in business and in life have dealt with many more failures than you might imagine. However they understood that learning from the failures was a spring board to success. Never give up, pursue your dreams with passion and diligence.
